Cartographer Mapping Scarscapes #1 (2005)

Inspired by the experience of losing all travel images of Cambodia when the camera malfunctioned, the artist took new photographers on his next solo trip to Vietnam, and layered the old film on new prints. This was the artist’s attempts to make up for the lost images, and recall the freedom experienced on these trips.

Here, the importance, and failure, of recording personal histories and memories was emphasized. Set as the last artwork to be experienced on the Hakka Cemetery tour, it reminded audiences of the memories and rituals that we hold on to, and how losing them might affect us.
