The Great Pretenders (2009)
The Phylliidae Study Group from The Institute of Critical Zoologists has been studying camouflage insects for more than 50 years. The life of the Phylliidae – the leaf insect – is shrouded in mimicry and pretense, since it can disguise itself as sticks and leaves.
The group holds regular meetings, displays at entomological exhibitions across the world and even creates their own hybrid insects. The best of these are presented at the Phylliidae Convention in Tokyo, Japan. These images here are the winning species from the 2009 convention.
But if you look a little closer, there are not leaf insects to be found. Here, the language of science is used by the artist to decieved audiences.
